Advocacy Anti-Poverty Week 2023
The Salvation Army has been a strong advocate for Australians experiencing poverty and financial hardship throughout our history.
That is why we are a supporter of Anti-Poverty Week, both to raise awareness of the prevalence and experience of Australians in financial hardship, and to help those who are in need find their path to financial wellbeing.
We also use every opportunity to advocate, on behalf of the people we serve, for governments across the country to act.
Throughout 2023, we have fought to address the social and economic implications of poverty upon all Australians at the individual, community and national level, including through the following submissions:
- Consultation on anti-avoidance provisions for credit product intervention orders – Australian Treasury– March 2023
- Inquiry into cost of living pressures in the ACT – ACT Legislative Assembly’s Select Committee– March 2023
- Consultation on consumer credit regulations – The Australian Treasury– March 2023
- Inquiry into the cost of living – Senate Select Committee on Cost of Living– March 2023
- Inquiry into the Extent and Nature of Poverty in Australia – Senate Community Affairs Committee– February 2023
We urge all levels of government to act on:
- Structural reform to the social security system, including increasing the rate of the JobSeeker Payment and Youth Allowance;
- Improvements to responsible lending protections; and
- Expanding the support of social, community and affordable housing.
